Lesson 7 Spot Your Talents Through Others

As Babe Ruth said “Don’t be afraid to take advice.  There is always something to learn.”

Whilst self-reflection can be helpful, seeking feedback from others can be a powerful tool for the following reasons

  1. It provides more reference points, and accepting it shows how your actions appear to others and how they can be improved.

  2. Taking a risk moves you out of your comfort zone.  Accepting a challenge and doing something new adds to your experience and helps to expand your knowledge and skills.  James Clear is his Book Atomic Habits shares that the Goldilocks Rule states peak motivation is experienced when people are working right on the edge of their current abilities.  Not too hard, not too easy, just right.  To achieve a state of flow a task must be roughly 4% beyond your current ability.  It also means development is a nudge not a leap.

  3. Indicates to others your engagement in your work and being able to highlight your willingness to progress.

Activity Name the Genius Part 2 Conduct a series of interviews with people you work with/who know you well.  Aim for at least 2-3.  Ask them the following questions, which can be found on Page 10 of your Black Workbook.

  1. What is something you have seen me do well?

  2. If you had a piece of advice for me and my career, what would it be?

  3. Who else do you think it would be worth having this conversation with?

Activity based on this feedback; can you make a link to your strengths?  To do this, reference what each of your Top 5 strength themes bring by reviewing the I Bring column of the My Signature Themes I Bring, I Need report on Page 9 of your White Workbook
