Lesson 3 Two Types of Expectations, WHAT and HOW

There are two types of expectations

  1. What expectations which are our priorities, what needs to be done.  These are best determined through a bottom-up approach, are co-created, and agreed, determined with the people closest to the work leading the conversation

  2. How expectations.  These are the behaviours you wish to see within the team.  These are top down, described as “how we do things around here,” are our team’s culture and often expressed through Mission, Vision, and Values

An example of how these two sets of expectations work, is that as a kid, I would guess, you were never told what toy to play with, but if you punched a sibling or friend you would hear “that’s now how we behave in this family.”

Both play an important role.  Because when you get both a what and a how, you get a WOW.  We remember the high performers we work with for this fact.
