Lesson 11 Appreciating Our Own Filters
Activity Being able to describe what is important to you, helps how you fit within the cultures you find yourself in; where there is alignment, where there is a need to negotiate. This is important as you set the culture for your team. As Simon Sinek outlines in his book Start with Why; there can be individual, team, and organisational whys. Whilst this ideally aligns with the culture we find ourselves in, it needs to reflect the different people, experiences, beliefs, and rituals that are found across an organisation.
Identifying Purpose (Mission)
What do you really stand for? Not the polished version you’d rattle off in a meeting, but the thing that sits under your skin. The thing that quietly steers you. Purpose and mission aren’t just buzzwords—they’re the deep current beneath the surface. They speak to who we are, how we see the world, and what we’re reaching for. When you’re clear on your why, decisions feel different. Work feels different.
But here’s the kicker: when we lose touch with that meaning—when the day-to-day becomes just ticking boxes—it’s easy to slip into chasing outcomes. Applause. Metrics. Approval. We forget what the whole thing was for in the first place.
So take a breath. Watch the videos. Sit with the exercises. This is about coming home to the reason you started.
