Lesson 10 Review and identify development
Activity Now is the time to bring it all together, with the goal to identify where to next. Personal development and growth leads to higher levels of self-esteem and lower levels of depression and anxiety.
Keep the following in mind as you review the points you have made on all sections of your Progress Review Template on at the back of your Black Workbook
Communication style
Language of workplace appreciation
What matters most
Take a step back from the form and review it with “fresh eyes.” Or could you do this with someone else; your team leader, teammate, or learning buddy?
As you work your way through the form, the aim is would be to identify potential areas of development or action that would support your performance looking ahead. Aim for 1. Note this on the Progress Review Template on the bottom right-hand side.
Shift from an outcome to an action goal by making it SMARTER
How can you be specific on the behaviour that will help to drive these actions, by being clear on what you need to do and say?
Watch For more on this thinking, see this video on lead versus lag measure
SMARTER is a useful tool as a check list to help refine actions to turn them into a lead measure.
Optional Watch for more on SMARTER, see the following video
Activity On Page 18 of your Black Workbook use the SMARTER diagram and questions as a check list to re-craft the action identified into a clear lead measure OR the below.
SPECIFIC Pin down a clear tangible idea of what you want to achieve or pinpoint an area for improvement
☐ Is it clear what exactly you want to accomplish?
MEASURABLE All goals need a yardstick otherwise we will never know if they are successful
☐ Will you know when you meet your goal?
AMBITIOUS A worthwhile goal challenges you to think big and reach outside your comfort zone
☐ Will this goal realistically stretch you and still able to meet this goal with effort by your timeline?
RELEVANT Will this goal really be good for business, does it fit with your values or wider plans? What meaning does it have for you?
☐ Is this goal worth working hard to accomplish?
TIME-BOUND Goals remain dreams unless you set timeframes and there is nothing like a deadline to motivate actions
☐ Is there a clear deadline set of when you need to meet this goal?
EMOTIONAL We feel before we think. It is a scientific fact. Even in hard business terms goals that come from the gut will likely have more sticking power because you want them more
☐ Do you and others feel good about this goal?
REWARD Because what is a goal if not rewarding. Keeping your incentive or the benefits of your goal insight will drive you on visualising the peak of the mountain and your satisfaction on reaching it
☐ Will you feel satisfied when you reach this goal?
