Lesson 4 Adapt Your Style; Teach, Guide, Facilitate

When managing someone and to support your team to deliver the WHAT’s (priorities) the situational leadership model provides a great framework to adjust our style based on the person and the task.

Watch For more on this approach, see the video

A simplified version of this approach is…

  • Teach more telling, show, teach, demonstrate.  This is outside in coaching

  • Guide More sharing

  • Facilitate More asking, guiding, self-discovery.  This is inside out coaching

Activity In the table on Page 7 of your Black Workbook

  1. When thinking about the interactions with your direct reports, mark the coaching style you use the most

Insight Did you select “teach.”  I did when I first did this exercise.  If you did, this is often the case because we model what we were taught i.e., the schooling system is about teaching.

  2. If you have direct reports, plot their names where you think your team sit.  Based on your current understanding of their skills and experience

  3. Is there anyone you would like to shift?  Note in the space allocated

    2. The coaching style currently used or used with you

    3. The style you want to move to

    4. Which of your top 5 CliftonStrengths themes thatm could help you?  Refer to your Page 6 of your White Workbook and the report My Signature Themes Contributions and the row Contributions.
