Lesson 2 How a Check-In Meeting Supports Moving from Boss to Coach

Activity On Page 6 of your Black Workbook answer the following questions

  1. What is one positive thing about having a regular check in meeting with your manager and your team?

  2. What is one thing that could get us stuck with a regular check in meeting?

  3. What is one thing that is attacking the priorities of your day?

  4. What is one thing at risk that you ought to be paying attention to?

The Need for Change.  A Check-In Not a Check Up

In the 4 Disciplines of Execution, the authors noted that

  • Only 15% could name one of their top 3 goals

  • 51% could say they were passionate about the goal

  • 81% were not held accountable

  • 87% had no idea what they should be doing to achieve the goal

There is a clear difference between checking in and checking up on someone.  If done right a check in meeting has the following benefits

  • Discuss top priorities

  • Big goals one step at a time

  • Prioritising the work

  • Calibrate what great looks like

  • Realigning your priorities.  Information is always changing

  • Addressing the barriers to performance

  • Share feedback

  • Celebrating successes

  • An opportunity for focused learning

  • Building a stronger partnership

  • Timely feedback and coaching

  • Reflect on how things are going

However there are several things that can get in the way of committing to a regular connect. The whirlwind of day-to-day activity can suck up attention and make it difficult to focus or make any progress on your strategic priorities, amplified by;

  • Change

  • Processes/red tape

  • Scope creep

  • The urgent getting in the way of important

A regular 1-1 check in meeting is important because

  • NASA rockets are only on track 1% of the time.  That is why we need space scientists, astronauts, ground control, recalibrating computer systems to help the rocket navigate resistance and reach its destination.    If that is the case for a rocket and humans are infinitely more complicated, we need to constantly check and adjust

  • 19% of employees strongly agree that they have recently talked with their manager about to steps to reach their goals

  • If a manager holds regular meetings with their employees, they are 2.5 times more likely to be engaged

The check in meeting is the number one thing you can do that will lift the engagement of your team as it touches all key 11 of the 12 elements of engagement.  See the diagram on Page 4 of your Black Workbook.
